Buy a new one! YUK! When it gets clumpy it is too old to use, I would recommend L'oreal Paris's Featherlash.How do you get clumps out of your mascara?

buy new stuff, and I'm not just being sarcastic, make-up honestly doesn't have the shelf life people think it does, you are SUPPOSED to replace your mascara every 6 weeks weeks (IF you use it everyday, I suppose if you use it less it would last longer), that's not to say the product will run OUT if you use it everyday for 6 weeks, but after that 6 week mark it goes ';bad'; and starts getting clumpy (usually dried out) not pumping the wand in the tube will also help keep your mascara. It puts more air in the tube and dries out the product faster. Think of your mascara like cheese, you wouldn't eat cheese that is too old and has been dried out, so why put that stuff on your eyes! Also if your BRAND NEW mascara is clumpy try switching brands, or get an eyelash/eyebrow brush/comb and use it before your mascara has the chance to dry to comb out the clumps (kind of like combing through your hair to get your gel evenly spread).
Use a metal (NOT PLASTIC) lash comb. I find it can get out ANY SORT OF CLUMP in my mascara =] its a hard to find tool; tweezerman and sonia kashuk are the only brands I know that make this. however, this makes mascaras so much easier to use and achieves much prettier looking lusher lash results, and I find I can use almost any formula on my lashes now and still look good (if it looks bad its never because of application, its because the formula flakes/smudges)
You shouldn't have that problem honestly. Mascara has a pretty short shelf life of 3 months after it has been opened, and thats how I can always tell its time for a new one.
If there are a small amount of clumps---just take the clump off the wand before using.
If there are ALOT of clumps---throw it away and buy new.
Never put water in the tube because it will cause bacteria to grow.
If your mascara is over 3 months old ( considering the date it was first opened) buy a new one if not clean the brush with baby oil. Then place the uncovered tube of mascara in a cup of very hot water, make sure the open end remains above the water. Let it stand in water for 3 - 5 minutes. Remove and replace cap.

You probably need new mascara... and maybe switch brands? I use Max Factor, and I've never had clumps with it. I just buy a new one every couple months.
Get mascara brush/wand testers. They usually have them for customers to try out mascara. You can grab a few at sephora or a department store. After you apply your mascara, use the clean mascara tester wand and brush it through your lashes to take out clumps. Every few months you should also replace your mascara.
Usually, when it starts to clump badly, it's time to get some new mascara. If the clumps are on your eyelashes, you can either not use quite as much or use a lash brush after applying the mascara.
use a mascara comb thing that has really small thin teeth in it. apply the mascara, then use the comb before the mascara dries to get out any clumps. also, don't dip the brush back in for each of your eyelashes. i find that one dip into the tube is more then enough for both of your eyelashes.
